The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Cut the avocados in half, remove the pits, and scoop the flesh into a medium bowl.

    About 2 min

  2. 2

Mash the avocado with a fork or potato masher to your desired consistency, leaving some chunks for texture.

    About 3 min

Cook’s note: Do not over-mash; some texture is desirable.

  3. 3

Add the lime juice, red onion, jalapeño, cilantro, salt, and black pepper to the mashed avocado.

    About 2 min

  4. 4

Gently fold all the ingredients together until well combined.

    About 2 min

  5. 5

Taste and adjust seasonings as needed, adding more salt, lime juice, or jalapeño if desired.

    About 1 min

  6. 6

If using, gently stir in the diced tomato.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Adding tomato is optional and can make the guacamole more watery if not deseeded properly.

  7. 7

Serve immediately with tortilla chips or your favorite dippers.
