Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 4 pcsbeef steak, about 175g each, 2cm thick
  • 1 tspsalt
  • 0.5 tspblack pepper, freshly ground
  • 1 pcsonion soup mix, from a packet
  • 1 pcscream of mushroom soup, canned, undiluted
  • 120 mldry red wine

garnish

  • 1 tbspfresh parsley, chopped(optional)

Equipment

cutting board · knife · oven · baking dish · aluminum foil

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Preheat your oven to 150°C (300°F).

    About 5 min

  2. 2

Arrange the steak pieces in a single layer in a 9x13 inch (23x33 cm) baking dish.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: For best results, use a cut suitable for slow cooking like chuck, round, or blade steak.

  3. 3

Season the steaks evenly with salt and black pepper.

    About 1 min

  4. 4

Sprinkle the onion soup mix powder over the seasoned steaks.

    About 1 min

  5. 5

Spread the undiluted cream of mushroom soup over the top of the steaks, covering them completely.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Use the back of a spoon to spread the soup evenly.

  6. 6

Pour the red wine into the baking dish around the edges of the steaks.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Pouring the wine around the steaks helps keep the soup topping in place.

  7. 7

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.

Cook’s note: A tight seal is important to trap steam and make the steak tender.

  8. 8

Bake in the preheated oven for 3 hours, or until the steak is fork-tender.

    About 3 hr

  9. 9

Carefully remove the dish from the oven and let it rest, still covered, for 10 minutes.

    About 10 min

Cook’s note: Resting allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more flavorful and moist steak.

  10. 10

Sprinkle with chopped fresh parsley before serving, if desired.
