The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Cook the spaghetti according to package directions until al dente.

    About 10 min

Cook’s note: Do not overcook the pasta, as it will continue to absorb sauce.

  2. 2

Drain the spaghetti and set aside.

  3. 3

Heat the olive oil in a large pot or deep skillet over medium heat.

    About 1 min

  4. 4

Add the onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.

    About 4 min

  5. 5

Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Be careful not to burn the garlic.

  6. 6

Add the ground pork to the pot and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until no longer pink, about 5-7 minutes.

    About 7 min

Cook’s note: Drain any excess fat if desired.

  7. 7

Stir in the sliced hot dogs and cook for 2-3 minutes, allowing them to brown slightly.

    About 3 min

  8. 8

Pour in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, banana ketchup, sugar, water, salt, and black pepper.

    About 1 min

  9. 9

Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce heat to low, cover, and cook for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, to allow the flavors to meld.

    About 15 min

  10. 10

Stir in half of the shredded cheddar cheese until melted and fully incorporated into the sauce.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: This adds a creamy texture and extra flavor.

  11. 11

Combine the cooked spaghetti with the sweet spaghetti sauce, tossing until thoroughly coated.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: You can also serve the sauce over individual portions of spaghetti.
