The method

Step by step

  1. 1

In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, ground pork, and ground chicken.

    About 1 min

  2. 2

Add the grated onion, bread crumbs, egg, and milk to the meat mixture.

    About 1 min

  3. 3

Season the mixture with salt, black pepper, nutmeg, and garlic powder.

    About 1 min

  4. 4

Mix all ingredients thoroughly by hand until well combined and sticky, but do not overmix.

    About 3 min

Cook’s note: Mixing too much can make the frikandel tough.

  5. 5

Divide the mixture into 8 equal portions. Roll each portion into an elongated sausage shape, about 15 cm long and 2 cm thick.

    About 10 min

Cook’s note: Aim for uniform thickness for even cooking.

  6. 6

Heat the deep-frying oil in a deep fryer or heavy-bottomed pot to 175°C (350°F).

    About 5 min

Cook’s note: Use a kitchen thermometer to ensure accurate oil temperature.

  7. 7

Carefully place 2-3 frikandel into the hot oil, ensuring not to overcrowd the pot.

  8. 8

Fry for 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally, until they are dark brown and cooked through.

    About 7 min

  9. 9

Remove the frikandel from the oil and drain on a wire rack lined with paper towels.

    About 1 min

  10. 10

Repeat with the remaining frikandel until all are cooked.

    About 7 min

  11. 11

Serve hot, typically with mayonnaise, curry ketchup, and raw chopped onions (frikandel speciaal).
