Simple Vegan Matcha Latte

Mise en place

Ingredients

  • 1 tspmatcha green tea powder
  • 60 mlhot water, just below boiling point
  • 1 cupplant-based milk, warmed
  • 1 tspmaple syrup(optional)

Equipment

Small bowl · Matcha whisk (chasen) (optional) · Small kitchen whisk · Serving mug · Small saucepan (optional) · Microwave (optional) · Kettle · Measuring spoons · Measuring cup · Milk frother (optional)

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Measure 1 teaspoon of high-quality matcha green tea powder into a small bowl or traditional matcha bowl.

Cook’s note: Using ceremonial grade matcha will yield the best flavor, color, and froth. Ensure your matcha is fresh for optimal vibrancy.

  2. 2

Heat 60 ml (approximately 1/4 cup) of water to about 80°C (175°F).

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Water that is too hot can scorch the matcha, leading to a bitter taste. A good indicator is when small bubbles form at the bottom of the kettle, just before a rolling boil.

  3. 3

Pour the heated water over the matcha powder in the bowl.

  4. 4

Whisk the matcha vigorously with a bamboo whisk (chasen) or a small kitchen whisk in a 'W' or 'M' motion until the powder is fully dissolved and a smooth, frothy layer forms on the surface.

    About 1 min

Cook’s note: Continue whisking for about 30-60 seconds to break up any lumps and create a fine, even foam. The goal is a bright green, uniform liquid.

  5. 5

Gently warm 1 cup of your preferred plant-based milk in a small saucepan over medium heat or in the microwave until it is hot but not boiling, reaching approximately 60-70°C (140-160°F).

    About 2 min

Cook’s note: For an extra creamy texture, use an oat or soy milk designed for baristas. If you have a milk frother, use it to create a luxurious foam.

  6. 6

Pour the whisked matcha into your serving mug.

  7. 7

Carefully add the warmed plant-based milk to the mug, pouring it over the matcha.

Cook’s note: If you frothed your milk, hold back the foam with a spoon and pour the liquid milk first, then spoon the foam on top for a beautiful layered effect.

  8. 8

Stir in 1 teaspoon of maple syrup, or adjust to your desired level of sweetness, then serve immediately.

Cook’s note: Other sweeteners like agave nectar, stevia, or a date paste can also be used. Taste and adjust until it's perfect for your palate.

Keep it good

Cook’s note:

For a refreshing twist, try serving this matcha latte over ice during warmer months. You can also experiment with different plant-based milks like almond, coconut, or cashew to find your favorite creamy base. A sprinkle of cinnamon or a dash of vanilla extract can add another layer of flavor. This latte pairs wonderfully with a light breakfast or as an afternoon pick-me-up.

Storage

This latte is best enjoyed immediately after preparation. If you have any leftover whisked matcha, store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 24 hours.

Reheating

Do not reheat the prepared latte as it will lose its frothy texture and fresh flavor. If storing whisked matcha, gently warm the plant-based milk separately and combine just before serving.
