  • 500 gfresh beef and pork sausage (boerewors), fresh
  • 1 tbspolive oil

optional serving

  • 1 pcsred onion, sliced into rings(optional)
  • 4 slicecrusty bread(optional)

optional garnish

  • 2 tbspfresh parsley, chopped(optional)

Equipment

tongs · large pan · grill

The method

Step by step

  1. 1

Preheat your grill to medium-high heat, or a large heavy-bottomed pan over medium heat.

    About 5 min

Cook’s note: If using a pan, ensure it's large enough to comfortably fit the boerewors without crowding.

  2. 2

Lightly brush the boerewors sausage with olive oil.

    About 1 min

  3. 3

Place the boerewors on the preheated grill or pan.

  4. 4

Cook for 10-12 minutes, turning occasionally, until the sausage is browned on all sides and cooked through.

    About 12 min

Cook’s note: Avoid piercing the sausage with a fork, as this can release the juices and make it dry.

  5. 5

If desired, lightly grill or toast the crusty bread during the last few minutes of cooking.

    About 3 min

  6. 6

Remove the boerewors from the heat and let it rest for a few minutes before serving.

    About 4 min

Cook’s note: Resting allows the juices to redistribute, resulting in a more tender and flavorful sausage.

  7. 7

Serve the boerewors hot, optionally garnished with fresh parsley and accompanied by sliced red onion and crusty bread.
